RGB vs. CMYK

"I just got an email from the gallery coordinator at my school who is letting us put on our RGB V. CMYK show. She's all pissed that I marketed our show outside of RMCAD without her permission, and sent me the link to your post on X Rocks The spot. I can't tell you how stoked I am that you went ahead and promoted our show for us. It really means a lot. But for some ridiculous reason, I have to tell you to remove the post. I'm furious. But i guess them's the rules.. So if you could take it down for her sake, i'd appreciate it. Thanks again though."
This was just sent to me from Kyle. He is showing some of his work at the Phillip J. Steele Gallery at RMCAD this coming Friday through Monday. The image above is a stack of printed fliers that he's using to promote his show. (Which is okay I'm guessing.) But for some reason when I (a friend of Kyle's) posted something promoting his show on this blog (RGB) the gallery coordinator freaked out! I assure you Ms/Mrs. Gallery coordinator that Kyle didn't come to me asking to post something about his show. I posted the show because I find it interesting and think that the greater population of readers might enjoy attending the show.
Any way, Kyle has mad skills and you should go check out his show at RMCAD this weekend. And if you see the gallery coordinator tell her that xrocksthespot™ sent you.

Again, no one is angry but you dear Hipsterado. We are glad he has the ambition to take on challenging projects and share his work with the larger community!
Like I said , keep making work & being proactive , this is a 'problem' I wish we had more instances of
It's a bit confusing that's all, we want it to be clear that Kyle is putting his own work up in a student space under his own ambition and its not an exhibit funded or presented by the school itself but rather by Kyle, if anything it should serve to credit him more, not less.
And really, bad press is good press, right? Anything that sparks debate is worthy of examination.
sorry you seem to have gotten so worked up about it!
It makes perfect sense that
It makes perfect sense that when a school project attracts outside attention from designers in the professional world, who may have connections that may help a student get a job when he graduates, that the school refuse to allow the student to market his show.
Because you want to teach young designers to not market themselves, not expose their work, and not build and take advantage of a network.
Of course, you want recognition for your school, so you can make more money off the students. Never mind that RMCAD has used Kyle's work extensively for their own marketing campaigns/purposes, and taken his money to educate him, god forbid he try to go above and beyond what the average student would do. After all the hours and hard work put into this project, is this gallery director so surprised that it garnered attention of people outside of the school? That's what happens when you have a talented student who's made connections, those connections speak up for them.
Kyle frequents art shows around town constantly, making connections and talking to people, those same people took notice when he did something. I have no idea who else is in the same class as Kyle, or what their project is, or what they've decided to do, but the fact that Kyle's project is getting local attention without his even trying, and his show is beginning to market itself without his even trying, shows that the project itself is already more successful on many levels than whatever other projects/shows are being done in his class. Because the marketing and exposure level has gone beyond a small classroom, and invited the critique and interest of professionals in the field of graphic design. That in itself should be lauded, because Kyle's talent and ambition have reached out beyond the walls of RMCAD, and neither RMCAD nor this gallery director will be paying Kyle's salary, but someone who is exposed to his work might be. And how the hell is it alright to post your event on Facebook, which is a marketing tool outside of RMCAD, but not alright for someone who saw it on Facebook to post the link on their blog? It's 2010, these things happened.
Hey gallery coordinator, Kyle never marketed his show outside of RMCAD, people heard about it and wanted to go, then invited people to go, because Kyle is fucking talented, and has made real-world connections. Instead of congratulating a student for creating hype and getting attention, which is a very important thing in the art/design field, you get angry because you weren't consulted? Well, don't blame him, blame his friends and the connections he's made for getting excited about his work and talking about it. You should be thankful he's getting your little gallery attention, I never once recommended anyone to any shows at the Emmanuelle Gallery at the Auraria Campus, and I've had 6 friends graduate from their art/design programs.
It's a strange lesson you're teaching a young designer here, gallery coordinator.
The issue here is not that
The issue here is not that Kyle cannot promote his installation. I am more than happy if Kyle wants to drum up visits and promote his work. I am all for it.
The issue is that this is not a Philip J. Steele Gallery exhibition. Kyle’s installation is not funded by the school or booked as an exhibition, this is an artist-organized installation. There are many conflicts of interest that arise if I were to give exhibitions to current students.
Kyle has, until now, exhibited professionalism and the ability to work around the schools needs and requirements. In short, the issue here is not that he is trying to promote his installation it is how they went about it.
just to clarify, no one is
just to clarify, no one is "pissed" we want people to come see the work! Its just problematic to promote a private installation for a class as an official exhibition sponsored by the school, its within the Philip J. Steele Gallery building, but its not being presented by the PJS gallery , or RMCAD, that's all
